چکیده

Microsilica, or silica fume, is an amorphous type of silica mostly collected as byproduct of the silicon and ferrosilicon alloy production. In this work, low shrinkage alumina-mullite ceramic composites were prepared from mixtures of calcined alumina, silica fume and aluminum metal powder and sintered at 1550 o C for 2 hrs. The influence of silica fume and aluminum powder on the densification parameter, in situ mullite formed and mechanical properties of sintered samples were studied. The phase composition and the microstructural evolution of the sintered samples were also investigated. The results showed that, silica fume enhances the mechanical properties of sintered samples, while the aluminum powder improves the mullite formation process. Ultra low shrinkage (close to zero), and good mechanical properties (CCS ≈ 70 MPa) of aluminamullite ceramic composites were achieved. Alumina-mullite ceramic composites are considered a promising material for high temperature applications.

Comparison of the effect of chromium oxide and magnesium oxide on the mechanical properties and microstructure of alumina-mullite-zirconia composites

Alumina-mullite-zirconia composites were prepared by the reaction sintering method between alumina and zircon powders and the effect of two additives (chromium oxide and manganese oxide)were investigated on their properties. 2 and 4 wt% of each oxide were added to the raw material composition and after pressing, the samples were sintered at 1630°C. The results showed that chromium oxide decreas...

On the Study of Mechanical Properties of Aluminum/Nano-Alumina Composites Produced via Powder Injection Molding

Powder Injection Molding (PIM) is a precision manufacturing process used for production of advanced composites. Mixing of polymeric binder with metal powders, molding of feedstock, de-binding of brown parts and sintering of green samples are four main steps of this process. In the present study, the compounds containing multi-component binder system and aluminum/ nano-alumina (0-9 wt.%) powders...

Improving of Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al-A356 Alloy with Compo-Casting Method

Aluminum/alumina composites are used in automotive and aerospace industries due to their low density and good mechanical strength. In this research, the effect of mechanical stirring of slurry in liquid-solid phase temperature and injection of alumina powder with inert gas (Ar) on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-A356 alloy is investigated. In order to improve of the wettability a...

INFLUENCE OF NANO SILICA ON PROPERTIES AND MICROSTRUCTURE OF HIGH ALUMINA ULTRA-LOW CEMENT REFRACTORY CASTABLES

Colloidal silica bonded refractory castables have been developed recently. It was found that colloidal silica is one of the best binders can substitute other binders such as cement in No Cement Castable (NCC) and Ultra Low Cement Castable (ULCC) refractories. Also composition of colloidal silica with appropriate additives resulted in a gel form which makes the initial strength. Moreover, the na...

Effect of Silicon Carbide and graphite additives on the pressureless Sintering mechanism and microstructural characteristics of Ultra-High Temperature ZrB2 Ceramics Composites

The effect of SiC content, additives, and process parameters on densification and microstructural properties of pressureless sintered ZrB2– (1–10 wt %) SiC particulate composites have been studied. The ZrB2–SiC composite powders mixed by Spex mixer with 1-2wt% C (added as graphite powder) and CMC have been cold-compacted and sintered in argon environment in the temperature range of 1800–2100ºC ...
